Armageddon The Musical Armageddon Trilogy Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Robert Rankin Audible Studios Books

From the point of view of 2050, you're history. Theological warfare. Elvis on an epic time-travel journey - the Presliad. Buddhavision - a network bigger than God (and more powerful, too). Nasty nuclear leftovers. Naughty sex habits. Dalai Dan (the 153rd reincarnation of the Lama of that ilk) and Barry, the talkative Time Sprout.
Even with all this excitement, you wouldn't think a backwater planet like Earth makes much of a splash in the galatic pond. But the soap opera called The Earthers is making big video bucks in the intergalactic ratings race. And alien TV execs know exactly what the old earth drama needs to make the off-world audience sit up and stare a spectacular Armageddon-type finale. With a cast of millions - including you! Don't touch that dial - it's gonne be one helluva show...
Robert Rankin describes himself as a teller of tall tales. The Morning Star describes him as 'The Master of Silliness', and his publisher describes him as 'The Master of Far Fetched Fiction'. He is the author of more than thirty novels, of which he has sold millions of copies, and he makes people laugh around the world.
Robert loves going on tour, signing books for readers, and his appearances at signings and conventions are legendary, often including a stand-up routine, a song (accompanied by his 'air-ukulele'), and an always-entertaining question-and-answer session.

The fundamental concept behind the book is excellent...what if Earth's history was manipulated by an outside force for the purpose of creating the biggest reality show ever? However, from there, it really starts breaking down. The story seems very disjointed until right near the end. The characters are really not very likable at all, and the author's concept of a religio-commercial war seems a bit over the top (admittedly, given that this is highly satirical in nature, probably intentional).
I'm sure many people enjoyed it, but I wasn't a big fan.

Armageddon The Musical Armageddon Trilogy Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Robert Rankin Audible Studios Books Reviews
A post apocalyptic world, Elvis Presley, a sentient time travelling sprout and an entirely alien planet.
What more do you want from a book?
If you haven't read this yet. WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU?
Rankin is mad cap at the best of times - this series hangs together better than most of his.
Follow the story of Rex Mundi as he takes on a new job working for one of the Big 3 Religions/TV stations on a Post Apocalyptic earth.
Hilarious, good running gags and good adventure. One of his best.
I couldn't even finish the book. If it weren't a digital copy I would have thrown the book out the window and into the nearest dumpster fire.
I love Rankin's work, pretty much wholesale, however I've had back-to-back "meh's" with The Fandom of the Operator and this one, Armageddon the Musical.
Neither were bad, but they just didn't work for me in the way that pretty much every other book of his has. Perhaps I'm missing Mr. Rune, perhaps this one is a bit too tangential (and I hope not, as this will mean I'm getting old), but it didn't rock me as everything else he's done has done.
The book itself did come in handy during an altercation with a restaurateur and provided additional leverage to the argument in regards to the bill, adding sufficient heft without becoming deadly. Granted, it was stored in my at the time, so I should probably thank instead of Mr. Rankin.
Rankin's mind is a playground. The plot of this book is both stunningly original, and bafflingly ridiculous. That is its strength. He successfully pokes fun at science fiction, action/adventure tales, romance, the entertainment industry, and most of all, the Big 3 religions. It is a crazy ride, and it kept me laughing all the while.
I'm still not sure what I'm reading, there are nested plots within nested plots. But it is constantly intriguing, and its vision of the world of the future, though tragic, is hilarious. The author must have had trouble licking away the tears he's crying over the fate of mankind, because his tongue far up his cheek. British, Ironic, Funny, Depressing, Mind Bending.
Robert Rankin is literally a literary genius. I've been hooked on the Brentford books for years, but going back to his earlier Armageddon works doesn't disappoint.
